Parents brainstorming ideas to increase assets among youth

Recently, parents and community members enjoyed an evening of interactive asset-building activities at the Coalition's Arm Your Child With Assets workshop held in Vernon.

Participants started the night off by playing "asset' bingo, to help them become familiar with the 40 different assets identified by Search Institute. Research has shown that the more assets a person has, the less likely they are to engage in high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse, risky sexual activity and violence. The evening presents interactive skill building for community members to learn about assets and how to incorporate more into the lives of their children and other youth they come in contact with. Some of the ideas parents came up with to increase assets in their community were:

  • Be clear with your boundaries and expectations and set them early. Aim high and lead by example. Spend time with your kids, talk, listen and pay attention to subtle clues kids give.Get involved in a new community group along with other existing groups.Role play with your kids.Let kids come to your house, have an open door.
  • Support them in sports, activities, whatever positive things they are involved with and CHEER them on!
