Sample Smokefree Policy for the Workplace

[Organizations name ]

Smoke-free Environmental Policy

Medical and scientific authorities worldwide, including the U.S. Surgeon General and the EPA have concluded that environmental tobacco smoke (ETS ) is a cause of serious illness, including heart disease, lung cancer, other cancer and respiratory disease in healthy nonsmokers. ETS is particularly harmful to children and to people who already suffer from respiratory disease, heart disease, or allergies. The only effective method to eliminate ETS-related health hazards is to eliminate environmental tobacco smoke.

Smoking also threatens safety. It is the leading cause of fire death in the United States and is associated with increased automobile and workplace accidents.

To create a healthful, safe, and comfortable environment [name of company or organization] will be entirely smoke-free effective [date]. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas, including vehicles.

[Smoking is prohibited on all company premises outdoors./Smoking is allowed outdoors only in designated areas.]

This policy applies to all [employees, customers, students, patients, tenants, visitors]. Copies of this policy will be distributed to all employees and signs will be posted at all buildings [premises] entrances and throughout all buildings and vehicles.

Any problems should be brought to the attention of the appropriate supervisor [manager] and handled through normal [personnel] procedures. Employees who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary policy.

This is one of the most important steps that we can take to improve our environment and support public health. We rely upon your cooperation.
