Below are tips, suggestions, and resources to help you connect with treatment and other support services. First and foremost, stay positive. There are many treatment options available, and taking the first step is an important part of the recovery process.
- When helping a loved one, treatment providers will generally need to speak directly with the individual seeking services.
- If there is no availability when you call, ask if the facility maintains a waiting list or can schedule an admission for a future date.
- Before calling, make a list of questions so you understand how the program is structured and what to expect.
- Ask what personal items are permitted, what items are prohibited, and whether transportation is available.
- Treatment may be available regardless of insurance status, including for individuals with Medicaid or no insurance coverage.
New Jersey residents without insurance may qualify for state or county-funded treatment programs, including SAPT, NJSI, DUII, and STORI funding.
To learn what level of treatment you may need, what funding you qualify for, and which treatment providers may be available to you, call:
ReachNJ: 844-REACHNJ (844-732-2465)
A trained screener will conduct an assessment to help determine your treatment options and eligibility.
- Have a pen and paper ready to write down provider information.
- ReachNJ can refer you directly to providers and may be able to connect your call.
- This assessment does not guarantee admission into a program, but it can help identify available treatment options.
Next Steps
Once you receive a list of treatment providers, contact each facility directly to inquire about availability for the level of care you are seeking.
- Ask if there are available beds or openings.
- Complete any required phone screening.
- Schedule an intake appointment or admission date.
- If no openings are available, ask to be placed on a waiting list.
- By calling the “800” behavioral health number on the back of your insurance card, you will be connected with a representative who can assist with providing a list of treatment providers who accept your insurance.
- These navigators can help relieve some of the stress by figuring out what facility you are able to go to and what, if any out of pocket cost there will be to you.
- If you know a particular treatment center accepts your insurance, you can contact them directly.
- If you are told there will be an out of pocket cost and you can afford it, ask if the facility is able to work on a payment plan.
