Each year, many ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty-level households pay $200 or more for tax preparation assistance. For households struggling to afford basic necessities, this expense can be a real burden. To help families file accurate and timely tax returns, get all the tax credits they have earned, learn how to save those refunds and avoid high tax preparation fees, United Way offers a free tax preparation program using IRS-certified volunteers.

Last year through this volunteer tax preparation program, more than 160 community volunteers prepared almost 6,000 free tax returns at libraries, community centers, and places of worship across northern New Jersey. Volunteers helped filers claim more than $2 million in tax credits, resulting in $6 million in tax refunds.

United Way of Northern New Jersey is proud to partner with IRS, NORWESCAP RSVP, Center for Prevention & Counseling and Great Providence Missionary Baptist Church to expand this vital service to reach the growing number of families and individuals in need across the region. No experience is necessary! An accounting or financial background is not necessary! The only requirement is an interest in helping people. Free training and support provided to help you become certified by the IRS. As a volunteer tax preparer, you will learn to prepare both basic federal and state tax returns using an easy to learn software program.

Please Contact Dianna Morrison at [email protected] for more information on volunteering opportunities.
