Counseling Services – Legal Aid

Don’t Let Legal Hurdles Stall Your Recovery from Substance Use

Are legal struggles like housing issues, family law matters, or a past record making it hard to focus on your health? At The Center for Prevention and Counseling (CFPC), we offer a specialized Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) to provide free legal aid and case management for Sussex County residents who are committed to their recovery journey.

By integrating legal assistance into our clinical care, we help you tackle the "social determinants of health"—the non-medical obstacles that cause stress and hinder long-term wellness.

Through our collaboration with Legal Services of Northwest New Jersey (LSNWJ) and the Law Offices of Michael J. Hanifan, we provide expert legal representation in the following areas:

Get help with evictions, public housing/Section 8 issues, lockouts, ejectments, landlord concerns, or utility shutoffs to ensure a safe, stable home.
Clear your criminal record to improve your chances of employment and housing in New Jersey.
Professional assistance with custody, child/spousal support, or domestic stability.
Secure the help you deserve by addressing denials from Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), unemployment, Social Security, or Disability.
Expert guidance managing creditor harassment, filing bankruptcy, wage garnishment, or problems with identity theft and credit repair.
Legal advice to help you navigate outstanding charges or legal hurdles.
Professional support for drafting wills, power of attorney, or advance healthcare directives.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. All legal services provided through the MLP are completely free for eligible CFPC clients.
Unresolved legal issues cause chronic stress that can trigger a relapse. Studies show that when these barriers are removed, individuals experience improved mental health and better adherence to their recovery plan.
Simply speak with your counselor or case manager. They will refer you to our Legal Case Manager for an initial screening to assess your needs.
Call or email Olivia to schedule an intake for counseling. During your intake, let us know you are interested in the MLP program, and we will help you get started. 908-747-1176 [email protected]
Counseling services at CFPC are not free, but we offer several affordable payment options. We accept Medicaid, offer a sliding fee scale for self-pay, and have county or state-funding options available for those who qualify.
